vitesse9's Review of Aimpoint Duty RDS 1x22mm Reflex Red Dot Sight

The only other Aimpoint product I have to compare it to is the PRO, which is great but too big and too heavy (not to mention ugly). By comparison, the duty seems a little poorly executed and even a bit cheap. The glass is mediocre. Not nearly as clear as the PRO. For that matter, I think my Holosun HS515GM is much better. The mount sucks, and I will replace it. The dot brightness is plenty for daylight shooting or use with a weapon light (I don’t use night vision). Also, mine doesn’t have the red ring some people complain about unless the brightness is turned up way too high. This isn’t a problem because I would never turn the dot up high enough reach that point. The brightness buttons work fine, but feel mushy and kind of cheap. I thought I wouldn’t like the windage and elevation adjustments being flush and requiring a Torx wrench. But, this might be my favorite part of the design. They are flush and sleek with no caps to worry about. Also, adjustments are positive and audible. Much better than the PRO. I guess in theory not having a Torx tool around when you need it could be an issue. However, once it’s zeroed, I don’t see myself messing with it that much. I’ll probably throw a Torx wrench in my pistol grip just in case. I really like the rough pressure-forged body. It exudes toughness. Its texture kind of reminds me of an old-school A2 style front sight post, and it feels like it could take just as much abuse. If this optic is as tough and reliable as my PRO, it will do the job, which is more important to me than mind blowing glass quality. Of course. The size and weight is a big improvement over the PRO and justifies the upgrade.

Cons:
  • base
