Firewall G's Review of American Built Arms Company Remington MOD*X GEN III Modular Rifle System

First, the good. I bought this chassis direct from AB Arms because it fit my budget. I mounted it onto a Remington 700 5R Gen2 in 6.5 Creed. The MLOK handguard is good quality with plenty or rail space. The lower is well-sepc'd, and the trigger guard housed a Geissele Super 700 trigger with ease. Mounting is simple. All the hardware is included and product manual has all the torque-specs.

Now, the not-so-good. The magazine well is very tight. Too tight for all my metal mags. The polymer MDT mags are the only ones that are practical. I had to remove some material from the mag well just to fit my Accuracy metal mags. But it still has way too much friction. The buttstock is horrible, its cheek riser is flimsy, and it comes without the rubber recoil pad. AB Arms wants and extra $30 for the recoil pad, but you can find it here on Optics Planet for $9. The pistol grip is cheap, hard plastic. I opted for the folder mechanism, but it adds almost 2 inches to length-of-pull. The folder, also, folds to the left. I prefer that it folds to the right -- on the bolt side.

I ended up tossing the buttstock and pistol grip for a Magpul PRS stock and a rubberized pistol grip. I will say this, though: I engaged targets out to 1400 yards with this platform.

Would I recommend this product? If you want a precision stock on a budget, need lots of pic space, and lean towards M-LOK accessories, Yes. But, get just the chassis/handguard. Do not get their butt stock, and opt for a better pistol grip. I do not recommend getting the folder. It is too long and fold the wrong way.
Pros:
  • Price and install ease
  • coolness factor - if that's important to you
Cons:
  • Butt pad not included
  • Mag well cut to small
  • buttstock
  • pistol grip
Best Used for:
  • Precision / long range
  • prone or bench shooting
Would Recommend: Yes
