JO's Review of Athlon Optics Helos BTR Gen II 2-12x42mm 30mm Tube Rifle Scope, First Focal Plane

I had purchased this Helos BTR Gen2 2-12x42mm AHMR2 and also a Athlon Optics Ares BTR Gen II HD 2.5-15x50mm APRS5. I was new to the Athlon product. I was willing to experiment with other options. The initial unboxing for both left me less then impressed. I was more dissatisfied with the Ares BTR Gen II HD 2.5-15x50mm, especially for the >$700 price point. Poor execution on the illumination and other factors more critical for the price point. That optic was promptly returned and I won't go any deeper into it for this review.

Initially I had no joy for the Helos BTR Gen2 2-12x42mm. I had purchased both for a more intermediate role on say a ARC/Grendel where the rifles themselves were more deserving of a optic that would work with the tier-1 barrels and were also intended to be slung. So the common observation/issue on the reticle subtention at max magnification can be an issue. It covers allot of image/target at magnification. Yes, an optic that cost less then the barrel...I get it. This review isn't framed to be hyper critical. Hopefully, to better understand what you are getting.

After playing with the optic, I warmed up to it for a different intermediate role on a 20" 556, specifically for steel. The image at 2x is decent, and while the PoA is not (even close) as dominate as a typical LPVO CQB optic, it works when the illumination is on max. It's a far cleaner 2x image then the Vortex SE 1-6x and 1-8x at 2x. The FoV is decent although at the maximum magnification the hold points cover most of the image, that is why I keep it. The 12x holds work well to mentally stage from one to the next if they are pre known distances.

I would avoid this option if your primary use is to impress yourself on paper. If your looking for something fast(er) for yotes, hogs, or where transition target opportunities are usually well beyond 100yards this might be a good fit. It could use a cat tail to make better use of what it could offer. The physical attributes do not help sell the optic much. It's 25oz without a mounting solution. For a few OZ more and a extra 1.5" in length you have other options, albeit, starting at 3x magnification to keep the relative costs in perspective. And if your starting at "well beyond 100yards" 3x is obviously GTG.

I can't speak to the durability. The reticle has a specialized utility, as most do. It's a interesting option at up to $450, I can't see paying any more for it. If this optic weighed-in at or under 18oz it would get more love. It is best-fitted for off-hand shooting with perhaps slightly better ability to hold or even dial to distances beyond a typical LPVO. Speaking of LPVOs, I found the eye box and speed of acquisition at maximum mag to best high dollar 1-10x with small objectives.

IMO the market could use more decent intermediate optic solutions starting at 2x magnification up to 12x-14x with a 40mm OBJ with better designed FFP mil reticles (or your fav) for under $1k USD, <12.5" on OAL, with illumination and under 18oz. Is this it? No, but its not terrible ...until it malfunctions. I will admit that this aspect was a motivator in writing a review.

In closing; the things that make it weird, perhaps uninviting, also make it unique in the lower cost 2-10x world.
Pros:
  • somewhat unique to market at the price point
Cons:
  • heavy weight
  • heavy reticle
Best Used for:
  • Hogs and coyotes
  • steel on time
Would Recommend: Yes
