Paolo Sasso's Review of ATN OPMOD 5-10x 50mm 30mm Tube Thor LT 320 Thermal Rifle Scope w/ Exclusive Reticle and ATN Quick Detach Mount

I start by saying that the Thor LT 320 is the first thermal scope I've owned and do not have others with which to compare it. That said, I really like this scope. My first impression of it coming out of the box was very positive. It looks and feels like a traditional scope with good fit and finish. It is larger than a traditional 10x scope but does not feel bulky nor is it heavy I would say it's on the light side. Adding it to a long rifle would not make it any more burdensome or add more weight than a high-end, high-zoom traditional scope.

The controls are fairly easy to work and intuitive. Unlike night vision, this works in total darkness. I could completely navigate around my basement and around obstacles in the complete dark. I would suggest that the operational range of the Thor LT 320 is realistically inside 200 meters. Maybe in a wide open field, range could be extended, but I find the images to be too degraded at long distances. Inside of 100M it is quite clear. Beyond 100m it would be easy to see if a creature has two legs or four, but difficult to distinguish the kind of animal. Zoom is 5x or 10x and nothing in between. Living animals show up very brightly in black and white (no color on this scope) and with good contrast. Additionally you can clearly see tree branches and landscape features. The scope sees cars extremely well, but I noted that I cannot see passengers inside the car when windows were up. In general the scope does not see well through windows. I had my daughter stand right outside the house, just a few feet away from a window. I could see my own reflection through the scope, but could not see my daughter at all. This is understandable given it's winter and the glass is blocking any heat signature. Eye relief is good and the soft, compressible eye piece is a nice addition, making it suitable for rifles with recoil. My package came with the charging cable and scope rings, but I believe the scope rings are typically sold separately.

NOTE: the scope was hand-held and unattached to any firearm in all of the above tests.

I would recommend this scope. There are better, but they are also more expensive. Based on my testing, I think this scope would be very suitable for night-hunting or for anyone who wants night vision capabilities.
Pros:
  • Scope body is a good design
Cons:
  • None
Would Recommend: Yes
