RobCinTX's Review of ATN OPMOD Exclusive ThOR LT 4-8x50mm Thermal Rifle Scope 30mm Tube w/ Custom Reticle and FREE QD Mount

I was really excited to get a thermal scope, only to have to wait forever for Optics Planet to ship. It finally arrived but had zero charge and wouldn't turn on until charging overnight. This morning I went through all the features and was a little disappointed at the image quality. Even after adjusting the focus, NUC and bright/contrast it was nowhere near as crisp as in the stock images. I live on 5 acres and have deer less than 30yrds from my door. As they moved away, I can see why some users would say it's hard to distinguish them from cattle. They were bright torso blobs with legs at a distance, but not easily recognized as deer- even though
I knew they were. It also failed to zoom as expected. I either get base which I think is 4 then "2x" which I'm now guessing means 8x? So no graduated zoom as in 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. I guess I'm dumb because when I read 4-8x specs that means 4 thru 8, not 4x/8x which is either or. This model also isn't on ATNs list for firmware. I don't know if that means its unsupported or what? If Optics planet didn't currently have a 3+ week return period, I'd ship it back and spend more on a Pulsar from Amazon or Night Vision Guys.
Pros:
  • low cost,
Cons:
  • poor image quality, detection clarity is bad over 50 yards
Best Used for:
  • people who can't afford better
