Nick's Review of ATN Thor 5 LRF 4-32x 640x480 12 Micron Smart HD Thermal Rifle Scope, 30mm Tube w/ Gen 5 Sensor

This is my first thermal scope. The packaging is superb. The engineering of this scope leaves a lot to be desired. The internal software "pauses" for no reason. I have had it lock up twice so far where I had to do a hard reboot. (15 second hold on power button)

It has an auto nuc option that does it WAY too often. If I could set that to every 30, 1, 2, 5 minutes that would be great. Nope. It does it every ~20 seconds. When it "Nucs" it has a small countdown which is nice cause it is going to lock your screen for a second or two.

The phone app is fine....unless you want to connect to the scope. Connectivity is very buggy. I have a recent iPhone and when it connects, it stays connected well. I tried to have the scope connect via hotspot on my phone, but that never did work. Sometimes the phone will connect with the scope and sometimes not. I have not found a pattern why it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. I did get it connected this morning and it stayed connected for over an hour...and then the scope locked up. Not the connection, but the whole scope. Had to hard reboot it.

Took it out last night and looked around the neighborhood. Saw three rabbits from 50-173 yards. All of them looked like dark blobs. Especially at 173 yards. I could only tell they were rabbits because of the way they moved. I feel like the image quality is good for 640x480 sensor and the distances I was looking at the little guys.

I did get the profile updated for my rifle and the ballistics information. I have yet to put a single round down range with this scope yet. Just trying to get very familiar with it first.

The rangefinder is pretty fast and easy to use. Seems accurate.

So far it just seems poorly engineered. But, I'm going to keep it. The price jump for other manufacturers is just too great at this time. Would I trust this with my life? NOPE. Would I trust this for a big $10K hunting trip. Probably not.

I feel like a few of the items could be simple software fixes, but it feels like part of it would require better hardware.
Pros:
  • image quality
Cons:
  • lock up
  • software
  • connectivity
  • wifi
Best Used for:
  • toy
  • Non critical weapons
