Ken Shannon's Review of ATN X-Celsior 3-9x Hunting Night Vision Rifle Scope w/Daytime Capability

I really like this scope. It works as advertised. I had an older Pulsar digisight scope that worked under the same principle - low-light sensitive infrared video camera. This one works much better. It is easy to use both night and day. The included infrared flashlight works out to hundreds of yards, but it is almost too bright 100 yards or less.
I'm confused though. I bought the 3x9 version. The box says 3x9, the side of the scope says 3x9, the identifier with serial number on the end of the box says 3x9. But when I turn the scope on, the widget that displays magnification shows 5. Increasing the magnification with the button on top of the scope has the numbers displaying 5, 9, 12, and 15. It seems like I bought a 3x9 scope, but the internal software is for a 5x15. Optics planet was helpful, sort of, by saying they're sorry they sent the wrong item and I'm welcome to exchange it. The box says 3x9, so they sent what they were supposed to.
I even contacted ATN directly. They walked me thru doing a factory reset. The guy I talked to was under the impression that during the factory reset I would be able to pick the magnification, but was surprised when that wasn't an option with the Excelsior line of scopes. I don't think he was familiar with it. There is also no firmware update available for this scope either. You'll get a little slip of paper notification in the box to update the firmware before you use the scope, but that's not applicable.
Anyway, I'm going to keep the scope even though it's too much magnification for where I hunt.
Pros:
  • Great night vision for the money
Cons:
  • nothing so far
Best Used for:
  • Hog Hunting
