LivesNearCostco's Review of Barska 20-60x60mm WP Blackhawk Waterproof Spotting Scope

This is my first spotting scope but I have borrowed or rented other models at the range, and taken this one to the range 3 times. I have the one with the straight eyepiece and bought it from a local sporting goods store (not from Opticsplanet). It works very well at 100 yards using the 20x or 40x magnification, though .223 holes on the black part of a plain target are very difficult to see. If I use a white, orange, or tan target, or a splatter target, then the small holes are easy to see. Eye relief and sharpness are decent at 20x or 40x.

At 200 yards I went to 60x and again could see .30 caliber holes easily on white, orange, or splatter targets, but could not see them on black plain targets. Also at 60x magnification, the eye relief is very short/limited and the picture is not very sharp, though again sharp enough to see the holes at 200 yards on a light-colored target. At 60x I can use the scope with safety glasses on, but I have to put my safety glasses almost touching the eyepiece to get a good view.

The included tripod works okay for tabletop use but if you want to stand next to or behind the shooter and use the scope, a taller tripod would be needed. If I had to buy one all over again for 200-yard shooting, I would spend more ($200-$300) for a scope with better glass and maybe a larger objective lens (70mm instead of 60mm?). For 100-yard shooting I'd probably just buy this one again.
Pros:
  • Price
  • easy to use
  • Magnification
  • Focus adjustment
Cons:
  • eye relief at high mag
  • clarity at high magnification
Best Used for:
  • shooting at various distances
