Ironmessiah's Review of Black Rain Ordnance SOCOM .458 Complete Upper Receiver
I am currently having the exact same problems as Brian with shells not going into battery and having to be mortared out. BUT, just getting to that point has been quite a journey. Out of the box and mounted on an Aero Precision lower, I was getting stove pipes nearly every round. As it turns out the ejection port spring extended down far enough into the opening to hinder the shells from being ejected. Once I figured this out, it was no problem to do a quick trim job and I thought I was good to go.
Wrong! From there I was having problems with the shells going even half way into battery and when they would, they wouldn't eject properly. I called BRO and they told me that the only ammo that this was guaranteed to shoot consistently was Black Butterfly. Fair enough, only problem was that is exactly what I was shooting! The rep said "in that case, you should send it back in for service". I, being the impatient type, didn't want to wait for 3 months to get my new rifle back so I did a little research and decided that it was the bolt. I purchased a bolt from Tromix and several boxes of ammo from SBR.
For a short while (using SBR only) it ran flawlessly. Thinking my problem was solved, I bought some more Black Butterfly ammo. Wouldn't shoot it at all and my supplier was out of SBR. I ordered some .458 ammo from Steinel Ammo and it runs hit or miss but more times than not, it will not go fully into battery and is stuck to the point I have to do a mortar job to get it out.
That is a somewhat abbreviated version of my plight to get this upper to function properly. It is without a doubt (IMO) a head space problem now and I do not posses the tools nor skills to fix that. I am scrapping the barrel and buying a new one from Tromix. Hopefully that will put an end to the madness.
I only gave this 2 stars because I feel like BRO would have eventually fixed the problem if I had given them the opportunity. And this is still one bad a** looking paperweight! It also seemed to be pretty accurate, when it would fire.
Still, what a disappointment for what I thought would be a high quality product. Not to mention the hundreds of dollars that I have gone through in ammo trying to solve my problem.
