Big Dreams's Review of Boker USA Magnum Rainbow Mermaid 3.75in Folding Blade Knife
Well you didn’t end up here because you’re looking for a survival knife, so settle down about the budget steel they use - this thing is awesome. I rarely cut anything but packages, boxes and paper, but I carry it to my physical work where people often ask to borrow blades and you cannot put a price on the way people’s faces light up when you hand them the Lady of the Sea - I’ve given a few away already, it’s a great way to hook your friends into knife collecting a and it’s just plain fun. It’s not the best flipper, it requires a bit of wrist flick to open it one handed… but when’s the last time your flipper tab was a literal technicolor integrated flipper attached to an ascendant, goddess-like Mermaid, rising slowly from The Sea of Scales…? It’s just cool. The entire blade and scales (handles) are rainbow technicolor distressed (anodized? coated maybe?) save the very edge. The edge itself is thin, the grind looks like a very gentle hollow or maybe even a high flat, until you reach Her Majesty, who adds girth and strength to the spine. The intricacy of the color alone is stunning, but you have solid metal scales and liners, so it also feels quite substantial in your hand - my Recon 1 feels like a toy by comparison. (They are entirely different things for entirely different tasks and I would never bring The Mermaid into the woods where I may need a dependable tool, that’s not what she’s for. Just as you wouldn’t pull out an Espada XL at work to hand someone who needs to cut tape!) Ignore anyone who poo poos this knife, it is a joy to hold, to share, to fidget, to stare at - it’s a work of art. The edge was pretty good out of the box as well, I stropped it about 50 x per side (just leather, no compound) and it’s now shaving sharp. This is still a Boker, and it came perfectly centered - their attention to detail spans all of their lines. There are bubbles throughout the blade and handles, actual holes, which just enhance the enchantment under any lighting. What else is there to say? The point is acute as well, so this wouldn’t be a bad blade to have if you actually needed a knife anyway. The size dimensions are almost the same as a Cold Steel Recon 1 or Ontario Rat 2 - both very common pocket knives. This one weighs much more however. For the price, you will earn your money back in smiles in a few days. Just do it. And Optics Planet is the jam - they take care of their customers - always come here first! Best customer service!
