SDM's Review of Burris Eliminator III 4-16x50mm Ballistic Laserscope Rifle Scope, Remote Cable Switch
I installed this scope on a 30-06 Colt Light Rifle. After programming, and sighting (both of which were easy), I took the rifle to my quarter mile range. The scope registered 440 or 439 yards with multiple tests. Trusting the scope, I relied on the electronic aimpoint. The first and subsequent shots (Barnes X, 180 grs.) grouped about 2.5 inches. Repeated tests, including ranges out to 475 yrs were equally rewarding. But, hunting with this scope revealed some issues. When elk hunting I had occasion to fire at a bull elk at 338 yes. in early evening. The elk was walking and was struck by the bullet. However the elk started to walk towards me. When I was certain I had the correct bull in the herd, I looked in the scope. Unfortunately the 338 yard "dot" was still illuminated but the bull had gotten closer. Further, without automatic self dimming the illuminated dot made it difficult to concentrate upon the basic reticle. Since the bull, which was hit was now walking, I needed to fire again. But I needed to try to get the correct range for a proper shot. Here is the weak link - trying to hold steady on a moving animal in marginal light to get the correct range, or simply turn off the dot, is difficult or, in the case of turning off the dot, is impossible. (I am not advocating shooting at moving game but sometimes it is both important and ethical.) It is those poor light or second shot scenarios that present problems. I shoot thousands of rounds each year so I am not a neophyte. In my view this scope is better suited to shoot at distances where ranges remain static.
