Rick's Review of Burris BTS 50 3.3-13.2x50mm Thermal Rifle Scope

First off, Optics Plant has been nothing but stellar in accepting my returns and getting me replacements sent out.
In two months I've had four different units in my hands. Three were BTS-50's and the other a BTC-50.

The first and 3rd BTS-50s units I received had very poor glass. The issues were spots, fish eyes, etc. Like dried water on the inside of the glass that you can't clean off and it was almost the entire glass, not just a speck here or there. The one BTC-50 (the clip on model) had the same issues. The second of the the three BTS-50's actually had really clear glass. But after sighting it in, the main reticle was not centered in the screen and roughly 1/3 off to the left of center! There is no way the user can correct that. I contacted Burris and they said I'd have to send it to them and it would be a few weeks before I got it back. So I just sent back to OP. I'd had enough..

I really wanted these thermal scopes to work, and I liked the user friendly menu adjustments! Working your way through the menu is very easy and fast. They got that right! But that's where the good ends. It's a shame Burris went so cheap on the glass, otherwise this would be a great product!

My experience in shooting is extensive in mid to long range 300-1200 yards. So glass clarity is paramount. Going in I expected these to get me out to at least 300 for shooting and that the glass would be at least clear of any visible imperfections. But that just wasn't the case in 3 out of 4 units.
I reload for all my semi and bolt freedom sticks. I have mostly 3 NF & 3 Vortex optics with one Primary Arms so I'm used to and know what great glass looks like. Yes this is a thermal, but, the glass should at least be free of any visual imperfections! This thing costs as much as some of my Nightforce optics yet, the glass is the quality of something in the $180 range. It's a real shame they got CHEAP on the glass and cut their own knees out from under what otherwise would have been a great unit! After spending $6,000 on Burris scopes and getting my money back, I guess I need to look elsewhere for thermals.

Burris will respond for a couple emails, but then they go MIA. I guess that's the norm when you can't refute the poor quality of your glass in your thermals. Lesson learned, if you want good thermals you're going to have to cough up some more dough. As we say in the scope world, buy once, cry once.
Pros:
  • User menu is easy
Cons:
  • Glass is pathetic in 3 of 4 units I had
Best Used for:
  • when the power goes out you could use it to find a match
