John's Review of Burris Signature Pos-Align Offset Insert Kits & Individual Inserts

Anschutz are beautifully made rifles and are exceptionally accurate ones too. However, for some reason, my 1416HB suffers from an uneven receiver. The forward part of the receiver is higher than the rear part. This causes an alignment issue between the scope and the rifle. In order to compensate, I needed to crank in just about every bit of elevation adjustment that the scope could give me to get the POI and the crosshairs to coincide at 50 yards.

Since using a scope set at the limits of its internal adjustments is a bad idea, I decided to give the Burris Signature rings a try because the ring inserts could be manipulated to compensate for an uneven receiver. So, I removed the existing BKL 257 clamp-on-rings (excellent rings by the way) and attached in their place Leupold QRW Remington 541 bases and Burris 1" Signature rings (Weaver base). I then centered my elevation and windage adjustments on the scope by counting the total number of clicks of adjustment and then set them both at their midpoints.

Since the gun was shooting low and to the right, I used the .010" offset inserts in the rear ring to elevate the rear of the scope and to incline it a bit to the right. This put me close enough to the X ring at 50 yards to use the scope's adjustments to dial in the final settings.

One thing -- it takes time to get the scope set up properly as you will need to do trial and error. The inserts come in 3 sizes. While the instructions give some idea as to the amount of adjustment that you will see with each size, you still need to try a few to get it right. Also, if you are compensating for both elevation and windage, then you will need to rotate the inserts in the rings until you get the POI and the crosshairs as close as possible. So, be prepared to spend some quality time with your rifle while you try different inserts and adjustments. This is not a job for someone who lacks patience.
