Legacy Reviewer's Review of Open Box Dealer Demo, Bushnell Sportsman 4-12x40 Black Gloss Multi-X Adjustable Objective Rifle Scope 720412C
I purchased the Sportsman 4-12x40AO scope with the intentions of having a cheap AO scope to try out on my 10/22. I figured that if the performance was unacceptable, then I would relegate it to my magnum air rifle. Well, I mounted it up, and was very impressed with the optics. It has very good control of flare and barrel distortion for an optic at this price. The lense coatings are not up to the level of my Elite 4200 or Elite 3200's, but those scopes cost 6-10 times as much as this one. I would say that the sportsman scope that I have delivers optical clarity close to that of my nikon prostaff. I really did not expect this much quality and magnification for under $100. I actually swapped this scope onto my Savage mark 2 heavy barrel .22, just to see how well it held zero and with Aguila Golden Eagle Match Rifle have been able to consistently shoot sub MOA groups. This is no worse than I get with the 5-15x40 elite 3200 that normally sits on top, although when the sun is in either lense, the elite's superior coatings take a clear lead. The tracking is very good though the clicks are not always positive feeling. It is a little heavy and large for a lighter rimfire like the 10/22 carbine, but feels right at home on a full size rifle. I have no idea how well it will stand up to recoil as I only have used it on .22's, but the construction seems of good quality. If I were on a budget and pressed to buy a scope for a .22, I would go straight out and buy another one of these. In fact, I will probably buy one for my air rifle, and see how it handles the double-action recoil. This is easily the biggest surprise I have ever had in the world of optics, and I wouldn't hesistate to recommend this scope to anyone who needs fairly good quality on a strict budget. It's 75% of the quality of my elite 3200's at 15% of the cost. Buy it and you will likely agree.
Pros: Cost, performance, repeatability
Cons: weight-not many for the price.
