E's Review of Caldwell AR-15 Picatinny Rail Brass Catcher

I bought this because a buddy allowed me to shoot on a large tract of land that he owns, on the condition that I cleaned up my brass afterward. Shooting was great, but cleaning up after became tedious and time consuming - I wanted to be a good steward of my friend's property, and I never knew if I got it all. This problem of cleaning up brass has several solutions, different companies have come up with different ways to solve this problem (stand alone stationary brass catcher, brass catcher attached directly to your hand, etc). I found this one by Caldwell and decided to go with it. It seems to be well-suited to AR-15 type rifles, or other semi-auto weapons with a rail on top and ejecting to the side. There are other, cheaper versions of this type of brass catcher exist, but it hangs straight down (doesn't have the internal structure), and attaches with velcro strap rather than the rail attachment on top. Again, there are pros and cons to both of these, but I prefer the Caldwell, at least on the weapon I'm currently shooting, and at least for now. You have to keep in mind that no matter what you go with, attaching anything to your weapon will add weight, and bulk, only on one side of your weapon. Furthermore, for the Caldwell, you have enough space on your rail to attach this brass catcher - the good news is that the Caldwell brass catcher is adjustable fore and aft of the brass catcher. Furthermore, you can adjust the distance of the brass catcher to the weapon by up to about an inch. This could be useful in reducing interference with the operation of the weapon. It can also quickly detach from your weapon, leaving just the rail attachment, which is what you attach the brass catcher to. Finally, there is zipper at the bottom of it to quick dump the used brass without removing it from the weapon. This would obviously be useful for reloaders who re-use their brass. Just beware that this can interfere with or obscure other features or functions of the rifle or add-ons you might have. And may prove cumbersome in action shooting. In general, I'm very happy with this purchase.
