Velocrank's Review of Caldwell XLA M-LOK KeyMod Bipod 6-9in

This is an initial review before shooting with this bipod, based solely on the installation process. The bipod is supplied with two plastic adapter plates, one for Keymod and one for M-Lok. They are the same plate besides the mounting hardware. This particular plate did not have a wide enough bed to cradle the slim M-Lok handguard on my AR, therefore pushing the bipod and plate too far away from the mounting point for the supplied screws to work. The solution is to either grind away some plastic from the edges of the plate or use a longer screw. I had no screws in hand so opted for a third option and eliminated the plate, placing some 3M double-sided tape between the metal bipod base and handguard. With this method, I was able to get a solid mount using the supplied screws and T nuts, however this will bring the bipod legs much closer to the handguard, enough the locking knobs contacted my handguard. I had to adjust along the rail to ensure no contact, and will still need to gently close the bipod legs to avoid contact with my blast can. This could be avoided with a wider "U" shape to the mounting plates or longer screw options included from Caldwell. Without actual use of the bipod, initial impression is the bipod is a solid piece and operates as it should with the extended and locking legs. Weight is low, and overall it looks like a streamlined setup without an extra bulk.
Pros:
  • Lightweight
Cons:
  • Mounting method was not "by the book"
Best Used for:
  • light range use
