ben's Review of OpticsPlanet Exclusive Celestron PowerSeeker 80EQ Refractor Telescope Package - Telescope 21048 w/ Motor Drive
I am a beginner, didn't know much about stargazing. Read all I could find, learned of the different telescopes available. For optics best scope seems to be a refractor, though dollars per inch it is the most expensive. For learning the nuances of telescope operation I wanted a good scope at a reasonable price. Didn't feel the need for a motor or "go to". Felt I should learn the sky and learn how to find and track my target.
On this scope, the finder scope should be checked before each observing. It is hard to adjust and could be sturdier. The RA adjustment works but you must run the screw all the way left if you are going to track. A bit confusing when the scope stops moving. For Declination I use the screw adjustment at the base of the mount, it is a bit jerky and the screw with handle is really to short, hard to find with my eye in the lens.
I have observed Venus in quarter phase, Orion Nebula, a Binary star, Rigel, Jupiter the "red spot" and 4 of its moons, also Saturn, her rings are now at 26 degrees from us, I can see space between the rings and planet and even make out 2 bands in the rings themselves. At next clear sky I am going after Titan.
BUT....THIS IS MY FIRST SCOPE, and the point of this is to learn what I want in a scope. For the value, the experienced gained..and it has been a challenge. I do not think that a better value exists for a beginner
