Uncle Monkey's Review of OpticsPlanet Exclusive Celestron Ultima 80 20-60x Zoom 45 Degree Spotting Scope w/Tripod
I was excited to see a Celestron spotting scope on sale. Having had access to and used a couple of their telescopes in the past, I thought it would be a good choice. I had been looking at various spotting scopes for over a year. Believing that Celestron makes quality products, I purchased this and eagerly anticipated the delivery. I was disappointed when I unpacked it and learned that it is manufactured in China. It shows from the first glance and touch. It is very lightweight, and cheaply built. The rubber "armor" will probably not protect it from much of anything. There is no "heft" to it, that would indicate that it has quality, well constructed optical or machined components inside. The whole exterior assembly is very "tinny". The accompanying bag/cover is a nice touch, as is the carrying bag for the included tripod. However, the tripod is an even bigger disappointment. To say that it is flimsy is a compliment.
After reading the instructions, and setting it up, I was somewhat pleased to see that the optical quality was better than my initial assessment would have one believe. That being said, it certainly is not even approaching the quality and clarity of the Celestron telescopes I have used.
I could go on, bit I think one gets my point.
If you're looking for a quality spotting scope that will last for years, don't buy this one. I'll keep it as a reminder that a "great deal" isn't always a great deal.

Pros:
- it was relatively inexpensive.
Cons:
- Very cheaply built. The tripod is worse than the scope.
Best Used for:
- Reminding oneself that a history of quality products does not mean that current products are up to the same quality.
