GR Thompson's Review of Choate Tool Remington 870 MK5 Pistol Grip Stock

I bought this stock in hopes that it would fit a Smith & Wesson 3000 shotgun, a near-clone of the 870 produced by Howa for S&W in the 1980s. This stock matches the Choate furniture that came on police models of the 3000 originally but that is no longer available separately. I’m writing this review to help other owners figure out whether to buy this or not. By swapping out the included 1/4” bolt for a 10mm bolt of appropriate length (I used threaded rod with two nuts locked together to adjust the fit, which is a couple of mm longer than the Remington bolt on my gun) the stock fit nearly perfectly without further modification. There is a slight gap - roughly 1/4” - between the pistol grip and the trigger guard that is the only area where it’s not perfect. The contour of the pistol grip seems adequate to keep fingers from getting pinched here, but I haven’t had a chance to shoot the gun with heavy recoiling loads yet so I’m not sure. If it does cause a problem I will probably figure out a small spacer to fill the gap because I otherwise really like the stock.
Pros:
  • Fit for obscure gun.
Cons:
  • Fit for obscure gun.
  • Obsolete sling mounting options.
Best Used for:
  • A real 870
