Brum's Review of Crimson Trace Laserguard for Ruger LCP II

I rarely post reviews but felt the need to here. I researched green lasers for my LCP II extensively before buying the LG-497 laser in March of 2020. Unfortunately the options are quite limited. My initial thoughts of this laser were very favorable and I would recommend a laser (in general) to anyone that owns an LCP II. The largest gain of the laser is perfecting the grip and trigger of this tiny gun during dry firing sessions. I can shoot 100% better after getting the laser because it taught me about my poor grip and trigger control. In fact I shoot my other handguns better as well as a result of all the dry firing sessions. Also, the green is incredible. I can pick it up in the daylight on most backdrops. If you would have talked to me a few months ago I wouldn’t have been able to recommend this product more.
Back to Crimson Trace, my gripe is their customer service. In July I had a random instance during target practice where the laser shut off after a shot while my finger had the button depressed. I let off and repressed the button multiple times but it stayed off until the next time I shot. Then it worked just like normal again. I’ve shot this gun a lot and dry fire it nightly so I know that the button was compressed and there was something malfunctioning. I loved the laser and wanted to write it off so I did. A few months later I had two similar instances a few nights apart, both while dry firing, that the laser shut off while the button was compressed and acted the same as the first instance. Both times, after messing around with it a bit I racked the slide and it worked again. The three instances seemed like a short that got jostled back into place by shooting the gun or racking the slide. I have emailed customer service numerous times and have yet to get any sort of response. I tried calling their customer service but they have been closed when I’ve called.
I have been so disgusted with their customer service and a bit scared with the three separate instances of a momentary failure that I do not recommend. This is hard to say as I did a lot of research initially before determining that they were the “best option” and read review after review of people with great things to say about their quality and customer service. Unfortunately I looks like I’m not the only one complaining about their customer support lately.
Pros:
  • Looks like it was manufactured as part of the weapon
  • Daylight and nighttime capability
  • dryfire training
  • Green laser is awesome
Cons:
  • no customer support
  • intermittent failures
