BobG's Review of Daiwa Tatula Bass Glass Cranking Rod

I bought this 7'-2" MH/Regular (Moderate) rod as a replacement for a Lew's David Fritts Perfect Crankbait rod with similar specs that was several years old. It will be primarily used for Lipless / Medium Diving Crankbaits and, based on a small sample size of casts from my dock, should excel for those purposes. It's a great looking rod and paired perfectly with a Daiwa Tatula 100 reel that I already had. The only knock against it is weight. I didn't expect it to be as light as the Tatula 7'-2" Med/Regular composite rod that I use for Squarebills / Shallow Diving Crankbaits but it is a little heavier than expected... almost as heavy as the Lew's it replaced. *This was my first fishing tackle purchase from Optics Planet and I was a little hesitant not knowing how the rod would be packaged for shipping. The triangular shaped rod box arrived broken almost completely in two, about a foot or so from the tip end of the rod. Luckily (and thankfully) the rod was not damaged. I'm not sure how much was saved in packaging costs by using a flimsy triangular shaped box versus the thick walled cardboard rod tubes that are used by the more 'seasoned' online tackle shops but it's a gamble and will be a consideration for me before I purchase another rod.
Pros:
  • Medium-Heavy power and moderate action are true to specs. Good build quality and components for price point.
Cons:
  • Slightly heavier than expected, even for a glass rod.
Best Used for:
  • Lipless / Medium Diving Crankbaits
