ClydesdaleBill's Review of Eberlestock Bang-Bang Range Bag
You can't get just one. When my first Eberlestock range bag arrived, I was in the process of reorganizing all of my shooting gear. I had recently added a precision long-range rifle (Remington Tactical Rifle in .300 Win Mag) and a whole new category, air guns (Ataman M2R carbine). I needed some way to get to the range with all the right accessories for each type of shooting, not leaving anything critical at home while not having to pull a trailer to haul all my gear. Not that there is anything wrong with trailers, for you .50 cal benchrest folks . . . just saying I wanted to be able to grab a bag or two, the desired weapon, and be gone without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out what to take. I ordered several different bags over the holidays, one of which was this Eberlestock. I opened it up and thought someone made a mistake. Inside the main compartment, accessible from the top, were eight individual spaces separated by padded partitions that Velcro'd into place. Looked like a high end camera bag, in fact I ordered another one for just that purpose, but by moving the partitions around to suit the equipment needed, I could configure the bag to do ANYTHING. And I did. And did. Four bags later, there is nothing left in the closet or gun safe to get left behind for any discipline I care to shoot. As a bonus, there is now more room in the safes for MORE GEAR. WOOHOO! Boy is my spouse happy about THAT outcome!?
But back to the bag. All the zippers are very robust, all have loops on them to simplify getting hold for opening or closing. The compartments on the ends are too big to be called "pockets", each end compartment has several internal pockets to help organize the "stuff" inside. To top it all off, or should I say "bottom" it all off, there is a semi-rigid bottom tray which zips on to the bottom of the bag, making a huge flat compartment that runs the entire length of the bag, no dividers to get in the way of longer items. It is water-resistant and rigid enough to give the whole bag shape while not adding much weight. Be careful-this bag will swallow so much gear that the bag will weigh 60 lbs before you know it. The amazing thing is that this bag could carry that weight without breaking a sweat, unlike this old man! Just keep in mind that everything you put in there will be going with you on your shoulder or in your grip. The bag will handle the weight easily, will you do as well?
The bag is not inexpensive, but when you factor in the money spent on other, lesser bags that ultimately don't cut the mustard, this range bag turns out to be a bargain after all. And did I mention there are external loops sewn onto the outside of most of the bag for attachment of any accessory you might have left over after filling up the inside. Even the shoulder strap has a wide solid nonslip pad so it won't cut into the skin and won't slide off unless your clothes come off along with it!
Quit searching for the right bag. Get one of these Eberlestock range bags and put your energy into searching for just the right gun to go with it!!
