Steve's Review of Elite Survival Systems Shoulder Holster Systems
The package includes everything shown: the double-sided harness, holster of specific size, double magazine pouches and clips to attach to one's pants and belt on either side. Everything is very high quality.
Details to note:
- The shoulder straps have a rubberized strip along their length to prevent the harness from sliding around when worn on clothing.
- A standard plastic squeeze buckle on a loop is on the side of the pouches to attach to a belt, and a different style of tie-down clip is on the side of the holster. This clip has teeth and, while small, should be adequate for holding the holster in place. Be warned however that the toothed grip of the clip may cause wear or damage to belts or finer-material pants.
- Lots of quick-release squeeze buckles make wearing and removing the harness easy.
- Long, highly adjustable straps are helpful for all body sizes, though slimmer wearers will find themselves with multiple long, dangling straps that can either be fed through existing loops or cut/sewn to be shorter. The material is synthetic however so any cutting of straps must be followed by melting the ends slightly to prevent fraying.
The shoulder holster system itself is fine, but buying the right product can be a little confusing. Here's my tips regarding purchasing:
I recommend prospective buyers to look up the item code or MPN for each holster system, as there has been a lot of confusion and the images are not always accurate to the actual product being sold (these codes can be found on the each product's page on this site). For example, there are two different types of shoulder holsters; assembly A and assembly B. Assembly A is the double sided harness, shown here. Assembly B is single sided, including holster and harness but not the pouches or tie down clips on the side of the pouches; hence, single-sided and not ambidextrous or modular on the side opposite to the holster. The MPN for Size 5, Assembly A (double sided) is MASH5-A, and the code is 7J-HT-EBAFFD-MASH5-A. The MPN for Size 5, Assembly B (single-sided) is MASH5-B, and the code is 7J-HT-DJKSOLSH-MASH5-B. The reason this is confusing is that both product pages show the same double-sided shoulder holster assembly, but this is only accurate for one of them (assembly A).
Additionally, there are single holsters being sold without the harness, but show the entire assembly; an identical image to the single-sided holster assembly (Assembly B), in fact. So you have 2 products with identical images, and neither of which actually shows the item you are getting; in the case of Assembly B, a different harness setup than the one pictured, and in the case of the holster, you are *only* getting the holster and not the harness, despite the image showing everything. Again, looking up the specific item code is important to avoid purchasing the wrong item, and make sure to read reviews if there are any! Opticsplanet does do free returns however so should one buy the wrong product, just return it and buy the one you want.
Lastly, be sure to buy the assembly and holster that fits your gun (obviously). While smaller pistols may fit in larger holsters, the corresponding magazine pouch may not accommodate a wider or taller magazine. I have not tested this out thus far, but it is something to consider. Thankfully, the pouches and holsters can also be bought separately, and there are other accessories that can be bought for this harness, offering interchangeability.
I hope my experience helps buyers in the future. Overall, highly recommended product.
