John Izbrand's Review of Elite Tactical Systems Universal Pistol Magazine Loader
In the classes I take, we do a lot of magazine reloads, so this looked like a winner. And the idea is great. But the implementation is weak.
First, it takes some strength and a solid table (or similar) to make this work. You really have to ram the magazines into it to get them all the way to the top, and failing to do so will cause it to not load at all. And when pressing the rounds into the magazine, it takes some considerable strength and several tries. Finally, getting the magazine out requires a strong pull which can pull rounds out of the magazine.
Second, it doesn't work hardly at all for single stack magazines. I use mostly 1911s and they require some jockeying once in the tool to get them aligned. Then, after getting a couple of round into the mag, more jockeying is required to realign the mag.
Third, I have double stack mags for the Browning HiPower, S&W M&P, and S&W type 59. If you get past the first problem, above, the tool will load around 9 or 10 rounds, but the rest have to be loaded by hand.
Fourth, the tool was extremely rough and difficult to slide. I had expected that using the tool to extract rounds from the box en masse would be a real advantage, but not so because of the difficulty of sliding the rounds smoothly. I spent considerable time just running it empty to try to smooth out the action, but no real luck. So I gave it a squirt of WD40 and continued to work it. It did end up working marginally better after that, but still nothing to write home about. And on top of that I don't like getting WD40 near my guns or ammo.
All in all, I'm pretty disappointed. But people are different and so are the products. So you may get a product that works better and more consistently than mine. But for me, it takes more physical effort and time to load a mag using this tool than it does using an Uplula or even by hand.
YMMV
