Via's Review of Fortis Manufacturing Night Rail Free Float Rail System
I ordered the Fortis Night Rail 10.5 in -MLOK through Optics Planet on Sept 2 – 2021
I returned it for a replacement of the same because it would not center itself around the barrel. The barrel nut sat crooked in the rail, due to miss alignment when the rail was being made.
When I received the replacement on Sept 24, I noticed it had the same defect.
I tried to replace it again for the same, but OP is not in the business of inspecting product prior to shipping, so they could not guarantee I'd get a good one. OP suggested I contact Fortis Manufacturing directly to remedy this issue.
Mr. Hwang #1 from Fortis Manufacturing was happy to oblige.
But when I received the replacement on Oct 6, upon inspection, I noticed that the black finish was incomplete, although the barrel nut alignment area was about 90% better.
I e-mailed, thorough details regarding concerns and requested to replace it again for the same.
Met with a slightly disjointed reply, Mr. Hwang #2 – CEO, from FM obliged this time.
But again, when I received the replacement I was compelled to e-mail this.
It's Oct 24 now.
Hi FM...
I just received the replacement hand rail and it was defective.
From Sept 2 till now I've received and replaced 2 defective Night Rails from OpticsPlanet.com and I've received 2 defective Night Rails from Fortis Manufacturing.
You can imagine this is getting pretty frustrating on this end.
I have shared information in previous e-mails to assist with providing a good item.
Would you be willing,
to take the barrel nut out of the rail, look at the seating area in the rail where the barrel nut goes, to make sure that the seating area has been machined straight and true.
Then, please look over the whole thing to make sure the black finish is complete.
I'm really hoping it works out this time.
Please tell me, in detail the steps Team Fortis will take to prioritize this mission and achieve success.
Thanks Team Fortis, I hope this helps...
The picture shows us the miss alignment. You can see the irregular edge, cutting into one side more than the other.
Mr. Hwang #2, replies.
I spoke w/ you regarding the rail. Since we extrude the rails, no extrusion is ever perfectly concentric. The machining is 100% perfect, that’s not the issue. When we make items out of billet aluminum, we NEVER have this issue, but with rails, it’s the nature of the beast since we’re ordering extruded bars. The longer the rail, the bigger the issue. The Night Rails in particular are noticeable b/c of our patented 2 piece barrel nut system.
At the end of the day we want you to be happy, but unless we can come to a middle ground, I’m afraid we’re going to miss the mark. These are not considered defective and just letting you know how extrusions work.
I’m actually traveling out of the country, but since I spoke w/ you - I wanted to clarify this. Please feel free to reach out directly.
Regards,
Mr. Hwang #2
So to conclude, FM was not willing to look for a straight made, well finished rail and send it to me, knowing one has to exist from the bunch. Instead of using the info and suggestions I offered to improve business, the efforts went into pacifying a nuisance. At least that's the impression I got. Further more it's impossible, that it's not possible to figure out how to manufacture a straight and true hand rail, no matter the process. It's a critical element to a rails performance. Sadly it's being overlooked here... I'm a fan of the design.
I would have liked to share a few pics with you to see for your self.
Pros:
- Fairly accommodating and stellar design
Cons:
- Will not center itself around the barrel.
Best Used for:
- Gardening or maybe a bird feeder
