trig1q's Review of Fox USA Olympian Folding Knife

I purchased this knife when it was around $68, which is a terrific price for a $200+ dollar USA made knife.
That being said, the condition of the knife left me wondering if it was a knock-off from China. The blade edge was one of the worst I have ever seen on a new knife - I cleaned that up pretty quick, and it did take a good edge.
The pivot was probably the most questionable aspect, as it was not smooth at all. The fact that it seemed to have a sweet spot of about 20 degrees led me to pull the pivot and spin it on some 3000 grit sand paper.
While it was apart, it took the same 3000 grit sand paper to the phosphor bronze washers.
The landing area for the washers also seemed to be a little off flat.
In the end I am very happy with the knife - extremely smooth now. But, I would expect a $200+ dollar knife to perform as this knife does now without the modifications.
Very much worth the $68 that I paid, but would have returned it if I had paid anything close to retail.
The only thing I haven't addressed is the rough texture of the G10 scales. Extremely comfortable and secure in-hand, but very rough on the pocket. Not a huge problem with jeans, but very rough on business casual. This can be a pro or a con depending on your needs.
If you are not afraid of taking the knife apart and cleaning it up, possibly a good investment. On the other hand, this could have been a "born on Friday" knife that was rushed through some of the build process - you might have better luck on a different knife.
Another point to note is that this is the same knife as the V-Nives Olympian, designed by Mike Vellekamp, which currently retails for $179.
Pros:
  • USA Made
  • Good Materials
  • Secure/comfortable in-hand
Cons:
  • Build quality could be better
  • Rough in pocket
