VT3's Review of Vektor SG-3 Beavertail AR-15 Grip

I purchased this directly from the manufacturer. I love how this grip feels when you are aiming and pulling the rifle into your shoulder, BUT, 11 degree angle and lack of a core means that when you hold the weapon at an angle when reloading, especially if said weapon is 16" barrel front heavy, the weapon will want to fall forward and out of your hands, without a core your fingers cannot counter-act this and the weapon can spin in your hand as your fingertips fall through the hollow center. This has not actually happened to me larping around in my living room to be fair BUT, simulating reloads and it absolutely wants to do this. I love how the grip feels otherwise. Ultimately I went back to a standard 22 degree angle grip (Magpul MOE) that allows for much more control while reloading, even though I added 1-2 oz more. I recommend this grip only for an ultra lightweight 3 Gun build where your life isn't on the line while reloading AND you probably have a much lighter weapon.

Problem occurs on both of my rifles, one with a PWS MK1 MOD 2 14.5" piston upper and the other a Springfield Saint Victor 16". The Saint Victor is known for being fairly light (6 lbs 12 oz factory) and believe it or not my 14.5" PWS piston upper is actually lighter than the 16" Saint Victor upper. Meaning, unless you have an ultralight build with CF handguard and pencil barrel you will most likely encounter this problem.

It's hard to describe, best way to understand this is take your rife with it's existing grip and hold it as though you are doing a reload, notice how your ring, middle and pointer finger are counter-acting the desire of the rifle to want to fall forward while rotating laterally to the right, barrel descending towards the ground? Ok no imagine your fingers with no ability to do that as the SG-3 is completely hollow.

This is larping around with dry grip and dry hands. Add rain to the mix and it's probably game over during a reload in a real situation.

I recommend only for and ultra-light build for 3 Gun.
Pros:
  • Light, feels great while aiming
Cons:
  • Rifle will want to rotate out of your hand while reloading as your fingers have no surface to counteract this tendency.
Best Used for:
  • 3 Gun ultralight build only.
