Sam's Review of German Precision Optics PASSION ED 8x56mm Abbe Konig Prism Binocular

I bow hunt, rifle hunt, and musket hunt in Upper Michigan and our season lasts until the very last bit of daylight is gone. A high quality set of glass is paramount to identifying a deer or bear at a distance in that last magic 30 minutes of season. Previously, I used a set of Pentax 7x50 binoculars that were, what I thought, excellent for low light. They did fine and were essential to my success on a number of occasions.

GPO is much much better. I could go on about exit pupil and the physics of what makes for a good low-light set of glass, but the bottom line is that the field of view is nice and wide for 8x and it is very crisp edge to edge for this price point. Due to the limitations of the human eye, 8x56mm is about the best that can be achieved for a low-light hunting optic. Color and sharpness are more than acceptable for hunting. if I pull up my Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50mm on 7x and compare, these binoculars are clearly better in light transmission and sharpness (and of coarse field of view because a scope is always a narrow FOV because its a scope).

If I spend $1500-2000 on a gun I use a few days a year, a set of $750 binoculars that I can use all season (bow, gun, musket) is not a bad value.

Once I got mine and tried them out it caught my Father's interest. Once he got a look he bought a pair. So mark this as two five-star ratings.

Outside of optics, the strap is very comfortable. The case is a bit tight and I use a different soft case most of the time. They are very solid and the hinge is robust. The eye cups adjust with authority and feel high quality. Unfortunately the focus knob is not lockable. A generous depth of field makes it very easy to pull focus and find game. If you read everything up to this point you are already sold on these and are just looking for reaffirmation that the purchase is justified. Go for it! It's worth it.

  • Clarity
  • Ruggedness
  • field of view
  • low light performance
