Nomad's Review of Gregory Compass 30 Backpack
This 30L size will meet the typical 22"x14"x9" airline carry-on challenge; the 40L version does not.
The bag clam shell access zips from the shuolder strap side, so it's secure from pick pocket attempts while worn.
The shoulder straps on Gregory packs are spaced wider than other makes, so if you are a larger than average person, that makes a real comfort difference on each side of your neck.
Also, it's built as rugged as a hiking backpack, minus the waist belt you wouldn't normally need or want for travel use.
