Hugh Russell's Review of Gunslick 1-pc Carbon Fiber Cleaning Rods

There is nothing cheapy about this product, but it has a major downfall. I have been through a couple of these thinking that if I really treated the rod gently, maybe the problem would not repeat. I bought these because I wanted to minimize barrel damage by using a nonmetallic rod, and have the silky smoothness of their rotating handles. The symptom of the problem shows up in the threaded brass end that holds the tool to be run down the barrel. Because the carbon fiber rod bends like a small fishing pole if there is just a little resistance, like with inserting the proper cal bore brush, the tool at the end can easily bend the brass threaded tool holder, or over time, cause flaring so that the mounted tool becomes wobbly and the flared edges scrape the barrel and catch during insertion. Brass is used because it is a softer metal, and will take damage before inflicting it on the barrel. However, once the tip is bent, the whole rod is worthless because there is no way to repair/replace the threaded tip. A tougher tip metal is not the answer. That would undermine the whole purpose of minimizing the risk of barrel damage. When I realized none of my guns have curved barrels even though I shoot that way, I figured out they do not require a rod that bends around corners. Gunslick needs a metallic rod core stiffener with a fiber carbon jacket. Until then I am back to metal rods with coatings, and catching baitfish on my Gunslick cleaning rods.
Pros:
  • Silky smooth bearing mounted handle
  • Made of barrel safe materials
  • Versatile caliber application
Cons:
  • Rod is too flexible, needs ridgidity
  • Cannot be repaired after end distorts
Best Used for:
  • Baitfishing: tie mono to patchholder
