Nathaniel Short's Review of Guntec USA AR Mini Slip Over Barrel Shroud w/Multi Port Muzzle Brake

I want to start by saying this barrel shroud is very well made and heavy enough to handle just about any caliber. The hole on the 5/8x24 model would probably pass a .45 caliber projectile. This will do 9mm & .350 legend with ease. Which brings me to the first issue; the diameter of this thing is ridiculously huge. Like half the size of a Coke can big. It's hard to compare the size of something by looking at a monitor. I was expecting a little larger than my barrel, but it's almost the size handguard. The second issue is, you will never get this thing timed right. For some reason there are two ports on the 5/8" model that the 1/2" don't have. There isn't much extra space for a crush washer, and the two holes on the end of the shroud will never line up. It's a minor issue, but just enough for my OCD mind to be bothered by. The last issue is the length. It's only available in 3 or 5 inch. If you have an SBR or Pistol upper, your rail better be 1/2 from the end of the barrel or this thing is going to stick out past the handguard. I have a 7.5" barrel with a 7" freefloat handguard on my .300 Blk, and it just covers about 3/4" of the barrel shroud. There really needs to be a 4" option. 3" is too short, and 5" would hit the gas block.
Overall, I'd still recommend this. It's a big, heavy, hunk of steel that's going to last, unless it backs off the threads and gets a hole shot through it.
Pros:
  • well made
  • Looks good
Cons:
  • short
  • timing is way off
  • large diameter
