Little A's Review of Hawke Sport Optics Vantage 1x20mm Red Dot Sight w/ Weaver Rail

It's pretty much your average red dot. The dot isn't super duper sharp but it is definitely usable. Actually, the dot on my cheapo $35 tasco from Wally World is bit sharper but the tasco has a bigger dot. The rheostat on the Hawke is a little scratchy when turned which is the main thing about the product that reduces the impression of quality. The metal body is nicely sculpted and looks pretty cool in person. But the real reason I got this red dot rather than any other is that it is rated for use on a break barrel / springer air rifle. I called Hawke and asked them. Spring powered air rifles have a reverse recoil impulse that the average optics aren't built to withstand. Springer air rifles destroy optics. Even very expensive ones. But I can put this on my son's break barrel rifle without worrying. It can take it. I've had this for a while now and I bought my son another red dot (a Hatsan brand that was cheaper but surprisingly nice) and moved the Hawke to my Ruger Mark IV which I use for NRA bullseye matches. It's small enough to work great on a pistol. It sits nice and low. The adjustments are nice and clicky making it easy to adjust. My Wally World unit is a mushy mess and adjustments are almost guess work. Also, you can make adjustments with the Hawke's turret caps. It is supplied with an adjustment tool but one of the turrets is close the the rheostat and it blocks the tool from turning. The battery life seems good so far. Still on my first battery and I've accidentally left it on a time or two. No auto off. I'm pleased with my purchase. It's proven to be be a very versatile red dot. It's at home on a bullseye pistol and a springer air rifle and I'm thinking about trying it on my 22lr semi auto rifle for some high speed plinking. The only negatives I have are the rheostat feels like it's scratchy or maybe not even scratchy but rubbing while it turns and the dot itself has some flare around the edges. But keeping in mind that this is not an Aimpoint or Steiner or some other extreme high end piece of equipment it's really pretty good. And if you're looking for something for your springer air rifle your choices are limited.
Pros:
  • Compatible with break-barrel air rifles. Battery life is good so far.
Cons:
  • Rheostat isn't oiled ball bearing on glass smooth. Some slight flare on the edge of the dot.
