Mark Richmond's Review of Hornady Versa-Prime Bench Priming Tool

If you’re on the fence about this tool, take my advice…Optics Planet has the best price by far…it’s dropped $36 since I bought mine barely a week ago. Sure wish I’d waited, but not at all sorry I bought it.

I followed the Hornady YouTube installation video for a perfect install on my Hornady Quick Detach Mounting system. Any system will work. I set it up for right-hand operation, which works best for me, but it can mount left or right per your preference. As per nearly all Hornady reloading tools, Hornady shell holders must be used. The primer hole on any other shell holder brand is too small. As my misfortune would have it, even my #16 Hornady shell holder is too small to fit. Thus, I’ll have to skip 300 AAC Blackout, 223 REM, or 380 ACP case priming for now. I may have another #16 somewhere, otherwise it’s time to order a new one.

Anyway, I loaded a full 100 Federal SPP into a pickup tube using my Hornady 1911 Primer feed tool. The kit comes with new tubes for Large and Small primers, but I wanted to check compatibility with the pickup tubes I already had. It worked flawlessly…100 primers into the tray, 100 primers into the fill tube, and 100 primers into the Hornady Versa-Prime bench prime tool.

The primers flow smoothly, feed smoothly, and seat smoothly, with a solid bottoming, and easily repeated motion. Turn the primer feed dial, insert a new case, drop the handle to the bottom (can be adjusted to your specs), verify the primer depth where I want it. Repeat. I went through all 100 cases with excellent results, no hand fatigue, no extra effort as in priming on the press, and I’m a fan. Changing to Large primers takes less than 2 minutes, though adjusting the desired seating depth may take another minute to accomplish.

This is a solid tool, with a lifetime warranty. Now I can clear my reloading room of a plethora of tried and unwanted hand and press priming tools. Prior to this I used the Frankford Arsenal Perfect Prime hand primer…it’s portable to any location, but for ease and repeatability, I’ll use my new Hornady Versa-Prime.
Pros:
  • Repeatable accuracy
  • easy to install, exactly as advertised,
Cons:
  • none I experienced
