Doug's Review of Hornady Lock-n-Load Bench Rest Powder Measure

I haven't had this long but I've loaded about 300 rounds of 223 Rem ammunition. I'm loading 28.2 grains of Hodgdon CFE223 powder behind a 50 grain bullet. CFE223 is a spherical powder and any measure will throw spherical powder more accurately than an extruded powder. I weighed 20 rounds and calculated the standard deviation. The results were 28.19 +/- 0.06 grains of powder. That means I should expect 99.7% of the loads to fall between 28.01 and 28.37 grains. Prior to using this measure, I weighed every load. I started off weighing every 10th round with this one but they all dropped so consistently I started weighing every 20th one. All the next 250 fell between 29.1 and 28.3 - many dead on at 28.2. The micrometer adjustment is easy to adjust and fine tune. It is not a click adjustment. The initial cleaning is necessary to get the sort of sticky gunk out of it and is a real pain. I was suspicious of the hopper and did a touch test to a very small area. It will be attacked by cleaning solvent.
Pros:
  • well made
  • easy to adjust
  • Very accurate
Cons:
  • Initial cleaning is a pain
  • The hopper is slightly canted
  • Hopper attacked by solvent
Best Used for:
  • Spherical powders
  • Smal tp medium cases
