Jamie Miller's Review of Lancer Systems L5AWM Smoke AR-15 .223 Rem/.300 Blackout/5.56x45mm NATO 20 Round Detachable Rifle Magazine

The very first thing I liked about this magazine was that it wasn't a PMAG. Secondly, it was dark translucent. Last, but not least, it was engineered with metal feed lips.

The first thing I didn't like about this magazine was that it wasn't (in a specific way) a PMAG. A latest generation 20rd PMAG will hardly flex when squeezing in the middle, or any other angle for that matter. The Lancer will, at least more than you'll probably like. The PMAG is a very bit heavier and more rigid. When handling or inserting into the magwell, the Lancer sounds noticeably more "hollow" or thin-skinned. Visually, the outer shell construction is slightly thinner. When you squeeze the sides of the Lancer, it is quite easy to get the spring to creak. I can hardly get the PMAG to do that. Over the years, we've all seen the PMAG torture tests on YouTube. I don't see this Lancer passing some of those tests.

Here is how the Lancer does independent of the PMAG comparison. It loads up very well. Each round a has pronounced click and perfect positioning onto the stack. (Even better round positioning than the PMAG). It feeds excellent, even so when I REALLY slow walk the charging handle into battery. The round pops free smoothly from the metal feed lips and jumps straight ahead into the chamber every time. Its non-tilt follower is flat operating and super smooth.

I bought two of these for a .223 Wylde varmit-purpose rifle. This is a casual fine target rifle. SO, I do not need these magazines to withstand a violent event or some "throw your rifle in the dirt" scenario. So, the magazines are perfectly fine for my purpose here. I do not consider these "go-to-war" magazines. The walls on these mags are undeniably thinner than PMAG.

Lancer is working on a GEN 2 right now according to their website. It MAY be addressing the outside construction rigidity with that.
Pros:
  • Not a PMAG
Cons:
  • Also, Not a PMAG
Best Used for:
  • Target rifles and looking cooler at the range
