AnalogDog's Review of Leapers UTG Law Enforcement Horizontal Shoulder Holster

I bought one of these just to try, before I went and spent a LOT of money on a leather shoulder holster. Turns out to be money very spent. It's obvious a lot of thought went into this piece. For one thing, it's simple to swap sides, and turn it into a left handed holster, which I require.
For 18 bucks, you get a nice padded harness, a padded holster with tie down, and a dual magazine carrier also with a tie down. Turns out, the tie downs help a LOT to keep the sidearm from moving around when you lean forward...why don't ALL leather shoulders include these? The tie downs also help cinch in the arm and the magazines snug against your ribs, making it a lot easier to KEEP your hardware concealed. And this holster does do that, superbly. Better than, truth be told than most leather shoulder holsters that lack the dual tie downs. If you get the black, and wear a black shirt, it's already done half the work for you, concealment wise. Once correctly adjusted, it is supremely comfortable, and distributes the weight of your blaster evenly across your shoulders. Having a spare mag in the magazine carrier also helps balance things out. Your gun does not jiggle or move around; and you can always feel exactly where it is. There are nice elastic straps joining the two halves of the harness together in the back, that stretch and give when they need to. Like I said, a lot of thought went into this thing.
Now the downsides: 1.)You don't get a nice thumb break that unsnaps positively with a pop, like you do with a leather holster. This is a soft holster; there is nothing rigid enough for something like that to be attached to. You get a velcro strap with two very strong steel snaps. For the life of me, I can figure out what purpose the snaps serve; they don't function as a thumb break. You're going to have to learn to pull the velcro strap loose, and then the arm will just slide into your waiting hand. A little bit slower, and you'll have to practice. For this reason, I'm not sure I'd recommend this arrangement for a 1911A1, as the strap when tensioned might defeat the grip safety. With a striker fired weapon like my Glock 22, you should be fine.
2.)The ring that the elastic straps attach to that holds the two halves of the harness together is cheap plastic.
I could readily see this breaking under rough conditions. Fortunately, it's about the right size that you could replace it with a steel key ring, which should work fine.
So even if you choose a much more expensive leather holster ultimately for your concealed carry, you should still have one of these. If you go fishing and get hot and sweaty, or if you jog or ride your bike, are you REALLY going to carry your blaster in a $200 shoulder holster? Nah....carry it in one of these, you can throw the holster in the wash afterwards...try THAT with your Galco Miami Vice! Highly, highly recommended!
Pros:
  • Versatile
  • comfortable to wear
  • lighweight
Cons:
  • Plastic hardware
