Stan's Review of Leapers UTG 3-12x44mm Rifle Scope

I was looking for a scope with target turrets, in the 3-9X or 3-12X power range for my .17 HMR target rifle. The name Leaper's kept appearing as I read reviews, so I went to the Leaper's site, and read up on their company, design and manufacturing history. It seemed like a very favorable US based company. The optics are made in China, but they are designed here, in the US (Livonia, Michigan). I found it hard to believe that this scope was everything and more that I had wished to find for the price I paid. I decided to take a chance. After all, It came with quick-detachable rings, flip-up end caps and a 36 color choice illuminated mil-dot reticle. If you don.t know what the mil-dot reticle is, I suggest that you read up as I did to understand the concept and usage of the system.
When the box arrived, the first thing I noticed when I unpacked the scope box from the protective-bubble wrap and outer box was the weight...Heavy. It was packed very carefully, as all Optics Planet orders have been. It is well made and fit nd finish get an A1+. The scope rings are very high quality items also. They match the matte-black finish of my rifle and its factory mounted scope rails. I attached the lower halves of the Q-D rings to my scope mounts and inserted the scope. Then I fastened the top rings, excising care to tighten according to the scope owner's manual recommended pattern while making sure that the reticle maintained flatness, parallel with the horizon. I went outside and sighted in on objects closer by at 3X. I sighted objects further away from the mid to the highest power and noticed how crisp and clear the optics remained. I turned on the illuminated reticle and was very pleased on the image enhancement. Red and green are probable great for 90% of situations. The various colors contrast with any landscape imaginable. I will sight it in upon the first time at the range, with a recommendation to start at 10 yards. Then, distances may be calculated using the mil-dot system from the initial settings at 10 yards out to the 100 yards that I will eventually want to shoot it at the out-door range. All in, I am very happy with this purchase that over-delivers in content and performance.
Pros:
  • Scope rings and flip-up end caps included
Cons:
  • Scope may be larger than your needs dictate for hunting
