Jake's Review of Leupold BX-3 Water Proof Mojave 10x50 Roof Prism Binoculars
I did not rush into this purchase. It took about 5-6 visits of side X side X side review of physically holding and testing the 3 binos in question, not to mention the online reviews I read which covered about 6 months total time. The 3 I considered were the Vortex Diamondback 10X50, Leupold Mojave BX-3 10X50 & Steiner Predator 10X42. All use Roof prisms. They are all very good, with "lifetime repair or replace" warranties, but there are some subtle differences you may not notice if you rush your purchase. I utilized Field & Stream, Bass Pro & Cabellas for viewing the various stuffed game they have around their stores. The deciding factor was the brightness of the Leupold Mojave BX-3, 10X50. They have superior light gathering ability when compared to the other 2. That stands to reason for the Steiner Predators since they were 10X42. That said, overall, I did prefer the Steiner over the Vortex. The brightness of the BX-3s really showed up when I was looking at a mountain goat. At first glance, one might think their hair is white, but their coat is a blend of white & light tan. With the BX-3s, there was excellent color separation between these 2 colors than there was with the other 2 brands. Increased brightness = increased clarity. I had the salesperson check out my findings and she agreed. She was a hunter and quite knowledgeable about all the brands of binos she had available to sell. She then compared the ceiling lights, and found them to show brighter & clearer thru the BX-3s. It was very obvious. In order to achieve the same level of brightness in the Vortex line, I would have had to step way up to the Vortex Viper HD 10X50, which were excellent, but I didn't want to spend that much. They retail for $750. & weren't any brighter. I like a bright sight picture especially at dawn or dusk & even when looking into the brush & shadows any time of the day. Adjusting the diopter on the BX-3s is a bit unconventional, but no big deal - set it & forget it. Whatever you buy, buy from O.P. You will save a lot of money & possibly sales tax. Don't hesitate to ask the CSR if they can beat their advertised website price. They did for me, substantially. Why pay more than you have to? HAPPY GLASSING!
Pros:
Clarity of the glass is excellent
Bright sight picture
Compact for 10X50
Ease of carry
Performance delivered outshines cost - no pun intended
Cons:
None except for personal preferences
Diopter control is a bit different
Best Used for:
hunting
Sporting Events
Viewing wildlife/scenery
