BDC's Review of Leupold Freedom 1x34mm Reflex Red Dot Sight
I picked up a 34mm thinking it would have a good FOV.... On measuring it looks like the actual lens is only about 1 inch/25mm. 34mm might be the tube size, but the glass sure isn't anywhere near that.
The bad:
Exhibits significant dot bleed and internal reflections at normal operating angles.
No threads for a killflash on the front and the front lens is mirror-reflective.
The dot is nearly as visible through the front as the back. At daylight brightness, it's visible across the room.
Very poor FOV for the dimensions. It's lightweight, but it takes up a lot of volume with no benefit for the bulk.
Exhibits significant dot bloom on the highest settings indoors. While most of it disappears outside, this combined with the exceptionally slow brightness adjustment makes it unuseable for tactical purposes or hunting in varying lighting conditions.
Dot adjustment is tedious. You just click the button cap to cycle through. There is no going down, only up until you cycle back around. It'll probably take 10-15 seconds to work your way through. Hope you're not staring down a trophy buck when you realize your dot is far too bright....
The good:
Legitimately clear glass. No hint of tint.
No distortion or lens effects.
Daylight bright for at least 3-4 dot settings.
Pretty lightweight for its size.
The middle:
It might need some break-in, but the dot adjustment knobs are really gritty. That's a minor gripe, those shouldn't get much use on the non-BDC version.
Can't speak to battery life, decided I was going to RMA it after 20 minutes.
Not really sure who this is meant for. The FOV is poor (for the dimensions) for tactical or competition. Same lens size as an Aimpoint PRO or ACO, but with more volume. The front reflectiveness, dot visibility, and super slow dot brightness adjustment is no good for hunting or personal defense. If you're just plinking, there are loads of same-price or cheaper options with clear glass (Vortex Spitfire) or superior features (PRO, ACO). The clear glass is a strong feature, but it's worse at everything else a red dot needs to do well.
