JP's Review of Leupold Mark 2 IMS AR Rifle Scope Rings Mount

I mounted a 33 year old lifetime warrantied Leupold Vari-Xiic 3x9x40. When I decided to move the scope from my M77 22" .308 over to my AR so I could accurately make adjustments at mid range targets (out to 325 yards). This allowed me to become a more accurate and repeatable shooter on distance shots, elevation, wind etc...

When I went shopping for a mount I felt the $98 , what I paid then during the rush, was a little high. I took a leap solely based on my Leupold Scopes performance that was nearly the same age I was and in much better shape lol. After 3 years I felt safe to review the mounts with much more confidence of my report.

I am highly pleased with the mount on several fronts. Next to zero suggestions for improvement although I have one. The mounts ability to rezero when moving the mounted scope from rifle to rifle is uncanny. If you place the mount back on the same T marks and pull the mount to the rear notch on the picitanny as you tighten each attachment screw slowly moving back and forth between screws tightening not completely tightening one all at the way before the other is. Very little adjustments if any on several notable occasion to get the remounted scope zeroed. They key I believe is the quality of the mount and my scope is decent also, but the main thing is developing an identical routine to remounting each time. The most adjustment to return to zero that was required was only a mere 3 clicks @ 100 yards using 1/2" MOA scope. The finish of the mount has survived my truck, the range, hunting trips, me removing and remounting the setup. Even though the scope mount isn't quick detach ..... A simple small (size escapes me) wrench easily removes the mount by loosening the hex head mounting screws from the flat top giving acceDespite the metal to metal contact they have avoided rounding off which causes major difficulties. Good old steel never fails. Thank you for not using aluminum heads on picitanny mounting bolts!!!!!!!
Now my only "barely a complaint"..... Since it was partly my ignorance and unfamiliarity of properly setting a scope up those years ago I made a few mistakes along the way. Nothing catastrophic , but very irritating. Saying this I would buy and recommend again and am in fact about to get a second IMS mount. So, I'm sure there is a valid reason for using Torx -15 6 pointed star headed ring screws. I inagine the screws prevent deforming the aluminum alloy ring or crushing scope tube maybe when over tightening. Dunno. I hope there was a reason. I put some serious torque on these not wanting my scope to have any play at all. I achieved this , but while doing so definetly rounded out 1 of four of the screw heads. 3 years no adhesive, no play. Luckily, it was super tight after the sand I take blame for probably overdoing it. All I used wa I've learned now the proper tool is the difference between needing a knife and only having a hammer. Tools make the difficulty of the job in my experiences. A year or so ago I wanted to change my AR over to a short range quick acquisition style optics. Needless to say I never was able to reverse the little Torx screws out. It was a blessing really because this gas operated rifle keeps MOA Groups out to 200 yards and under 4-5" regularly at 300 yards. Not super impressive, but I can repeat this in any weather any day any time with this setup. Mount is super secure. Nothing ever changes.... 16" Older Colt HBAR 1:9 carbine w / G6A4 ( I was surprised of the slight (1/4 - 1/2") tightening of groups compared to the G6A2 flash hider... Ad was true in my case. 5 Shot minimum for a group or its luck lol. 300 yard groups are as consistent as the sun rises and sets each day. 10 degrees or 95 F, with hand loaded acclimated ammo it's always 10 clicks on a 1/2 MOA adjusting scope compensating for the 15" drop. Headwind add a hair more drop, at your back a hair less. Literally, hairs. No more guessing drop. Math equals bullseyes and holding reticle over target and squeeze. Guessing gone.q
I've even successfully switched the scope mount w scope on occasion from my AR to AR, also to my Ak variant SLR-106cr chambered in .223/5.56 with the smallest effort for rezeroing on a different platform totally w same caliber. Warsaw mount for the AK sits a visible and measurable amount more above the bore than on the AR rifles. Despite the Tork screws, this is dollar for dollar one of the best around. I always here raving reviews about the Pepr scope mounts in one piece. Buying this one has prevented me from ever finding out. Leupold did a heck of a job here. Every bit worth the inflated $98 I paid during the gun scare. Just be sure to take extra care slowly tightening each scope ring slightly while moving to the next tightening an equal amount tightening in a diagonal pattern until screws are secure.
After a minimum of 10,000 rounds between AR15s, (I have a pile of empty primer boxes to keep a rough round count) nothing ever loosened or required maintenance.
Pros:
  • Leupold Quality 100%
  • One Piece mount prevents scope canting
  • Very repeatable zero even changing Firearms as long as attached in exactly same procedure as previous
  • Beautiful Aluminum Matte finish
  • Keeps scope comfortably low to bore axis
  • Fits many scope brands... Fits Leupolds' like a glove.
  • Fair price when compared to Top Name Mounts
  • Repeatable zero even changing platforms
  • Minimal adjustment rezeroing even changing platforms
  • Not difficult to remove mount with small wrench. Very quick, although not QD quick. Consistency makes up its non QD hardware.
  • Probably one of the most dollar for dollar performance and durability wise purchases I've made. That says something getting change from a $100 too.
  • No Loctite to secure screws whatsoever. Take care not to over torque or to tighten each screw all at once. Tighten each one a little in a cross pattern to evenly place scope in rings.
Cons:
  • Torx star head screws for securing rings
  • must tighten Torx screws with care and
  • The fact I have to drop more money on another. After 3 years with one I don't have a choice, especially when being paired w new Leupold glass
  • TIP: Use a small ratchet to prevent over torquing and head stripping of these screws. A Torx 15 bit used in the ratchet and a direct downward force not allow the bit to slip the grooves will make life much easier if ever changing your mind about scope/mou
Best Used for:
  • I enjoy mid range (300 yards) AR shooting. Extra secure mount insures identical adjustments produce identical results 99.999% of time.
  • Pairs spectacularly with Leupold Optics. Despite the 30 years separation in manufacturing they seem to have been made for one another
