AbominAble's Review of Leupold RX-800i Range Finder With DNA Engine

I started to archery hunt again last year after a 20 year hiatus from it where I only hunted with a firearm.
After last years hunt I realized I'm not as good at estimating distance as I once was which isn't such a big deal with a rifle but can be a HUGE problem with a bow, I needed a range finder to supplement my lacking skill.
After a LOT of searching and reading reviews I settled on a Leupold, I wanted the 1000 with all of the bells and whistles but realized that it states that it's water resistant- not proof.
That was its only downside, although probably good enough I need water PROOF !
I hunt in some tough country in both WV and MI, getting soaked happens no matter how hard you try to avoid it and I don't want my several hundred dollar investment getting wrecked by an accidental dunk.
After some searching I found that the 800 model is still rated as WATERPROOF, although it gives up a little distance the thing I wish it had most that comes on the 1000 is the red led display; the black works fine but the led is a beautiful upgrade.

I've used the 800 to hit targets at over 500 yards with consistency from day to day.
It's light weight, small, and easy to use. The optic is exceptionally clear and bright to my eyes. I've tried it at dusk and although the black letters in the display are harder to see at that time they're still good enough to see.

I'll be setting up my rifle to its ballistic setting and trying it out come fall, with all of the choices it has I'm sure that I'll find one close to my trajectory that will help me if I get a shot past what I would have tried making without it I don't mind shooting out to 200-230 yards by estimate but with its precision I'm going to practice to 500.

All in all Leupold has come out with bigger and better models but this one is no slouch- and it's waterproof.
Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • easy to use
  • Waterproof
  • Small
  • Clear optic
Cons:
  • Needs the newer red led display
Best Used for:
  • Anything you need a rangefinder for
