D W's Review of Lockdown SuperMax Universal Vault

I got the mechanical lock, my preference, and it is pretty inexpensive as far as gun safes go that have mechanical locks. It is as simple lock with five numbers and one number can be used only once in any combination either with other numbers or by themselves. Other mechanical lock safes have more numbers but are much more expensive. The safe seems to be very good quality strong steel and has a snug overlapping closure on all sides. If you are looking for a simple bedside, low profile, quick access, handgun safe it is a pretty good deal.

Only one side note - The handgun I store is a standard sized, standard capacity double stack semi auto: approximately 7 1/2 inches from muzzle to hammer, 1 1/2 inches from top of slide to bottom of the slide below the guide rod (not including small laser/light combo mount that does not protrude past the muzzle), and 5 1/2 inches from top of slide to bottom of magazine along the handle. All to say I have a relatively normal sized pistol with a small light and laser mounted on it and it fits very snugly with one mag in the safe. I would imagine you can get a 1911 in here with a spare mag as well but, standard 1911's are pretty slim and I am not taking into account any accessories. The point I am making is that if you have a true full sized modern semi auto with a 5 inch barrel, that has a standard capacity of 20 or more rounds, and additions like a red dot or larger laser light combo (Streamlight TLR1/2 and the like), you might be hard pressed for space. Not saying that you couldn't but it will be a tight fit.
