Lee's Review of Lyman 55 Classic Black Powder Measure

This powder measure is specifically designed for Black powder but can also be used for other powders - the hopper holds ample for the big 45 cal rounds I load and once you adjust the measuring screws, will consistently throw the measured powder each and every time. It is brilliant and never once deviated in the hundreds of throws made through it - no doubt the baffle adds to that however, like all hopper filled reservoirs, once you get down to a smaller volume, the pressure is less on the powder at the bottom irrespective of the baffles and you may need to adjust it. Easier to keep it filled to a set level and then it never deviates.

On cleaning it is so easy to strip and wipe down the brass sleeves - read the instructions and you won't go wrong but first off I'd recommend washing it thoroughly in solvent to remove the shipping oil - the instructions show you how to assemble and disassemble

The knock arm is an added feature and has it's uses but I find is not needed for most throws as the consistency is there to start with and any settling is already accounted for. A word of advice in setting it up - the mounting screw at the rear does not allow for small thicknesses such as shelving etc - it's designed for 1" thick timber and that's what you need...it will grab thinner, but you may need to anchor it differently or consider another option.

The drop tubes work well and the threaded coupling are cut accurately - all up it's a well made bit of kit and I would recommend it to all re loaders - its certainly not the cheapest on the market but for black powder it's a must have if you load lots of cases
Pros:
  • Well made and functional
Cons:
  • mounting bracket
Best Used for:
  • loading black powder
