The same delema with all battery operated equipment. Timing the usage and bat. life so your not dead in the water and can't find your way back.A solar device and rechargable batteries may be an option. plan your trip. Take extra.

Cons: rapid battery life, using back light. Take lots of batteries if going any distance.
