Shooter's Review of Magpul Industries Hunter 700 Rifle Stock, for Rem. 700 Short Action

I have to admit I was skeptical about this stock when it debuted. Lets face it- most times in life you get what you pay for and this stock was not exactly in the price range of the higher priced stocks or chassis options out there. After reading a lot of reviews and talking to a lot of guys about this stock I was reassured that it was one of those anomalies in life where you get much more than what you pay for! This stock replaced the lackluster Hogue stock on my Remington 700 AAC-SD. It free-floats the barrel (with a little room to spare) and is very sturdy in general. The fit and finish of the stock itself is nice. I chose the FDE color for a little more "sandbox cred" and it looks great on my rifle.

So if I had a gripe about this purchase it would be that the "accessories", or in my opinion "necessities" to complete the stock- and take full advantage of its potential- are sold separately. I can't imagine anyone wanting to retain the factory bottom metal and hinged floor plate on the 700. I like the detachable magazine offered by Magpul so that was a must for this purchase as well. It only comes with the lowest cheek riser available for this stock- the others are sold separately. I find my cheek weld is too low for the scope I'm running right now and would like a little higher perch on the rifle. I truly thought it came with a few different ones to try. Not a huge deal- but disappointing. It does come with the pieces to change length of pull- which is very intuitive and a nice touch. I wound up buying a few things to make the stock work better including their bipod mount (it's aluminum not plastic for those of you interested), their qd sling stud for the rear of the stock, and the cheek risers. My Harris bipod works well on the front of my rig and I like having the qd for the sling.

And for the part most people are most interested in- performance. This rifle is a 1 MOA at 100 yds. shooter and always has been with the right ammo (Federal GMM 168gr. for factory loads) and the right conditions. I am still working out the ideal torque setting for the action screws and a few other variables but I was able to shoot a 3/4" group at 100 yards with this stock on my last range trip. I really feel the benefit of this stock versus the factory Hogue will be exponentially better at longer range. I'm really pleased with the results so far!

All in all I really like this stock. It's a great value for the money- even if it lacks a few essentials out of the box. It changes the ergonomics of the rifle and allows a more custom fit. You'd be hard pressed to find a better option for the money.
