Allan Segal's Review of Magpul Industries Hunter 700L Stock for Remington 700 Long Action Rifle

Appears to be solidly constructed with an aluminum block for the receiver. Wide free float area with comfortable fore-end and butt..... But...There are some design drawbacks:
The Bolt can not be removed without first removing the cheek piece cover. This adds a step to cleaning the chamber, and it makes air travel cumbersome (you have to remove the bolt for the TSA and carry tool to reattach at destination) or for those whose Range Officer demands bolt removal when the range is "cold."
They supply a lot of spacers for length of pull, but no inserts for the cheek riser...so you have to buy them from Magpul.
My Rem. bottom metal did not fit flush(ly?) with the action screws tightened to their torque specs, causing a problem with the mag. release. (The action screws could be shortened to fix this)
The Magpul bottom trigger guard and ext. mag kit are back-ordered, so you can not get them yet...but one online reviewer who received this addition noted that it was not relieved enough to accommodate a Timney trigger (common aftermarket replacement for Remington's factory trigger), so he had to file down the trigger and widen the trigger guard.
You have to drill and tap your own holes for sling swivels. Why couldn't Magpul have done this--and inserted sturdy metal inserts so that the swivels are secure? The rail mount areas require M-loc devises ONLY, so those of you with KeyMod items are out of luck. They have a hole on the stock for a QD swivel, but you have to buy a QD swivel receptacle to put into the hole. I guess whole (hole?) idea is to sell more Magpul stuff...I get that, but they could have made it easier. And why not have the trigger guards ready to ship when they released the stock?
Pros:
  • Strong aluminum bedding.
  • Fully free floated
Cons:
  • Accessories are expensive.
  • Bottom mag unit back ordered
  • Sling swivels require drill and tap by owner
  • Needs dissambly to remove bolt
