Legacy Reviewer's Review of Meade Ultra Wide Angle Eyepieces Series 5000 82° Apparent Field-of-View 1.25" Barrel Size
This eyepiece solved a unique problem that I was having. I had purchased a Personal Solar Telescope. I must say that it is one of the most fascinating, cost effective purchases that I have ever made. The view of the Sun is amazing and ever changing. As soon as I looked through the PST with the original eyepiece, I knew that the telescope was capable of higher magnification, so I tried some other eyepieces from my expensive collection. All of the ones that had the right focal length had problems with light scatter inside the eyepiece. This is usually not a problem when the eyepieces are used at night, because most objects in the night sky are not bright enough to make the lighy scatter inside the eyepiece a noticeable problem. Not so with the large, bright Sun. The image looked like a SOHO satellite image, with the sky surrounding the Sun all filled with light and glare. I knew that the solar corona is not visible, except during an eclipse, so that the construction of the eyepieces was causing the unwanted glow aroung the Sun. The glow made it more difficult to observe the prominences, because some are quite dim and faint. You need a very high quality eyepiece to observe them. The Meade Series 5000 Ultra Wide 6.7 mm did the job. Fine details in the solar prominences look better than the SOHO satellite images on the web. You'll need sunscreen with this eyepiece, if you have a PST.
Pros: Great eye relief and exit pupil diameter
Cons: None that I can find
