R's Review of Monadnock Cuff Oversized Steloy Hinge Handcuff
As a law enforcement officer, I think we look for the best way to reduce weight of gear we carry on our body. For years, I have carried Smith & Wesson M300 model hinged handcuffs. I dislike chain handcuffs due to the lack of control I can have using them. Peerless makes an extremely light aluminum handcuff but only in a chain version. An aluminum handcuff worries me a little bit as well because it is not as strong as Steel. The only lightweight hinged handcuffs on the market is made by Hiatt that I could find. This are made of Steloy, which is supposedly a combo of steel and aluminum. Something that is odd, is they do not list the weight of the product anywhere that I could find so I could compare it to my current set. I ordered a pair of the Hiatt handcuffs and received them today. The first thing I wanted to do is weigh them. My Smith & Wesson M300 hinged handcuffs weighed 313g. My new Hiatt 3154 handcuffs weighed 221g for a tremendous weight savings. That equates to a 29% weight savings. I'll take it as every gram counts. The actual wrist hole is bigger as well. I didn't believe the Hiatt handcuffs would do well for a person with small wrists, but when I compare them to the Smith & Wesson, they have a very comparable diameter at the smallest setting. I have not used them out in the field yet but time will tell how they end up.
