Skierjim's Review of Newcon Optik Spotter ED 20-60x85mm Spotting Scope

Hi All
I was looking for a good scope that was under $1000, however, I didn't want to purchase anything from the PRC so the selection is small..like two. The Lupold GL 15*30 or the Kowa 660 (Japan) I saw the Newcon and I did some online research on the Company.

Newcon is a US military DOD supplier and they are a Primary supplier to the Canadian Military. The company specializes in high end ship and weapon platform (chopper, tank, plane) mounted laser rangefinders. They also make a high end spotting/sniper scope with integrated range finding. The company has its plant in Toronto.

I read the catalogue and the ED has what they call a Mill Dot reticle system. Its really closer to the P4 S&B reticle as the marks are hashes not dots. But in any case...with any Newcon optic scope you get the same reticle system with ranging calibrations etched in at 20x and 60x.

I emailed the company regarding the origins of the scope. I had an answer in 8 hours.

The glass is hand picked from Japan and the Bodies are manufactured in Hong Kong. The scope is assembled and tested/certified in Newcon Toronto Canada Plant. Your instruction booklet has the name of your scopes final inspector.

Its a great glass!! I was pleased by the weight! I comes in a pack bag/case with a good tripod. Its an 85mm so the picture is huge!. The reticle is easy to use and the controls are smooth.

I did request the straight model which is long ! If you are looking at hard cases you will need a minimum of 22" by 6" as the scope is 20"x4"

I would highly recommend the scope..I am glad I got one!
