Raven's Review of NightForce NX8 1-8x24mm Capped LPVO Rifle Scope, 30mm Tube, First Focal Plane (FFP)

I must admit I was a little concerned about buying the Nightforce NX8 1-8 scope after reading all the bad reviews online. But I have learned from experience anyone can write a review. I have also learned everyone who shoots thinks they are the best shot and know all about guns, scopes, and all other firearms related gear. When in fact most know very little and cannot shoot to save their lives!
I base that on my experience as a Police Officer, retired infantry Marine along with running a Gun Club, shooting 3-gun, combat pistol, high power rifle and cowboy matches along with watching and listening to the other shooters.
With that being said, I do not know who came to the conclusion the Nightforce NX8 1-8 Scope has a bad eye box and is extremely hard to see out of. It appears they are all wrong! I have had absolutely no problem with the eye box being anywhere near tight or a problem in any position! I have tried to push my limits and found no problem with the eye box no matter what I did! My guess is someone who can not shoot very well posted a YouTube review of the Nightforce NX8 1-8 and everyone else followed suite with that review because they wanted everyone to think they knew what they were talking about when in fact they did not.
The Nightforce NX8 1-8 scope is a great scope and not my first Nightforce. It does have a fixed parallax which makes it a little harder to focus. It took me about 10-15 minutes of playing with the eye focus ring until I got the reticle and objective clear at all ranges. Could be my eyes which are not what they used to be. The reticle is a great combat and 3-gun reticle and not a precision shooting reticle. It is made for fast target acquisition and engagement. I see no need for the elevation adjustment after sighting in the rifle. You should use the reticle for holdovers. You need to shoot your rifle at all distances, so you know the correct holdover for your rifle at any given range. Do not rely on any book or application to do it for you. I have found them all to be wrong. I was able to maintain a ½ inch group with the NX8 1-8 at 100 yards and strike steel out to 525 yards without any problem. The scope tracked perfect when sighting it in.
The illumination of the scope is as bright as a good red dot scope in bright sunlight and turns down low enough to use in total darkness without blinding you. Great overall adjustments.
The over all quality is on par with all the other Nightforce scopes. No scope is a do it all scope every scope has its advantages and disadvantages. If you want a precision scope get a 20X or 32X scope. If you want a fast close quarters scope that runs like a red dot with the advantage of 8 power magnification when you need it at long ranges, you will love the Nightforce NX8 1-8.
The best gear in the world will not make you the best shooter. It just lets you shoot to the best of your ability. If you want to improve your performance, only knowing your gear and practicing with it will do that.
Pros:
  • Works like a red dot and rifle scope
Cons:
  • Can not think of any
Best Used for:
  • 3-gun and tactical shooting
